Read Othello’s Like To The Pontic Sea soliloquy below with modern English translation & analysis:
Spoken by Othello, Othello, Act 3, Scene 3
Like to the Pontic sea,
Whose icy current and compulsive course
Ne’er feels retiring ebb, but keeps due on
To the Propontic and the Hellespont,
Even so my bloody thoughts, with violent pace,
Shall ne’er look back, ne’er ebb to humble love,
Till that a capable and wide revenge
Swallow them up.
“Like To The Pontic Sea” Soliloquy Translation:
Just like the Pontic Sea, whose icy current and compulsive thrust never relaxes in a retiring ebb, but keeps pushing on to the Propontic and the Hellespont, just like that, my bloody thoughts with their violent pace, will never look back, never ebb to the calm I felt before until a huge revenge swallows them up.
